He could have made the trip later if it was just for the sword once he knew Jon was safe at Winterfell. It seems like an extra trip when his main priority was keeping his promise to Lyanna and protecting the boy. I know it seems like the honorable thing to do for ned (returning the sword), but also having a baby with him, he would have wanted to limit the babies journey especially if R+L=J. I think Starfall as well has more significance than it seems. I can see your argument, I just don't particularly agree with it, nor do I think it's ironclad just because it's Ran's idea. I also think that Ned knew what he'd find there, and that they knew Ned knew what he'd find there. I just don't think they'd leave an infant entirely without protection. In other words, I don't think Jon's location during the ToJ battle has to mean anything regarding his legitimacy. In which case, it wasn't an option to split up.) Even if they didn't know specifics, they probably could have safely assumed that they would be outnumbered against any party. Fwiw, the KG don't seemed surprised by the Northerner's arrival in Ned's dream. (ETA: This is assuming they knew that Ned's party was headed to the tower. They were already facing difficult odds at 3-7, so it might not have been possible to send one of them with Jon. In order to do this, it was necessary to prevent Lyanna from communicating with (someone like) Ned. Basically, the idea is that the best way to protect Jon was to keep his existence a secret. The presence of all three men at the Tower only makes sense if Jon is there too.Įven though agree with you, I can imagine a scenario where the three KG decide to stay at the ToJ while a legitimate Jon was sent to Starfall. At least one, probably two, and maybe even all three, would have been at Starfall with him, not at the Tower with Lyanna. Were that the case, I don't think all three Kingsguard would still be at the Tower. I disagree with Ran that Jon was at Starfall. I think it was to return the sword but also to escort Wylla back I think Wylla was Lyanna's midife and wet nurse at the Tower and that's how she got involved in all of this. No doubt Howland Reed will most of the answers, and I'm certain he will reveal at least some of this crucial information in TWOW, as GRRM has already confirmed that he will be appearing at some point. I'd be very interested to know people's thoughts on the above. While I seriously doubt Ned would have murdered her as it goes against his strong moral code and sense of honour, this could have happened through Howland or some other more indirect means, and would go further to explain Ned's considerable guilt concerning the events of the Tower of Joy and the aftermath.Īnother question is: could some of this evidence be uncovered through Obara being sent after Gerold Dayne (who is currently in High Hermitage, not far from Starfall, and may know of the evidence and of Jon's heritage - somewhat explaining his action taken against Myrcella)? There is something fishy about the death in many respects - and we could even go so far as to suspect that something akin to Lysa's fall through the Moon Door in ASOS may have occurred, if Ashara had been a threat to the secret of R+L=J. I would also theorise that perhaps Ashara's death was not suicide, and was perhaps the result of a plan gone awry from Ned and Howland, to keep the evidence in a secure place. I very much doubt he would have waited to return north to do so.īy bringing the harp, or other evidence suggestive of R+L=J to Starfall, Ned would have a remote location known by little to secure these items before heading north, and Howland Reed is the only one who might know if this is the case. I think this is far more likely that it is in Starfall than it being in the crypts of Winterfell, where it is far more likely to be uncovered, and given the sense of urgency that Ned would have felt to hide any evidence in the immediate aftermath of the Tower of Joy. We know that Rhaegar spent a good deal of time at the Tower of Joy before he was killed. Of course we know that Ned went there to return the sword Dawn to Ashara but is there more to this than meets the eye?ĭid Ned bring something else here - evidence from the aftermath of the Tower of Joy that needed to be hidden? Rhaegar could well have left his harp with Lyanna, as a token of his affections before he went to battle. I was going over these events again and looking at the map of Dorne, and it seems like a strange detour solely to return a sword, seeing as Starfall is not on the route back from the Tower of Joy up north, and given the fact that Ned's sister had just died and surely going north would have been the absolute priority.
